Comedian Attorney Takes Stand(up) To Hasbrouck Heights

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. — New Jersey's highest court might have stripped him of his judge's robe, but River Edge comedian attorney Vincenzo “Vince August” Sicari says he still won.

Sicari, who's scheduled at Banana's Comedy Club in Hasbrouck Heights on Oct. 23-24, had to give up the gavel after the state Supreme Court found doing standup and presiding as a Municipal Court judge violated New Jersey's Code of Judicial Conduct.

It hardly fazed him.

“I chose comedy and being an actor as my passion," Sicari told Daily Voice. "And I still have my law practice to let me keep chasing my dream.”

The law practice makes that possible, he said.

“I always wanted to be a comedian and actor as a kid,” said Sicari, who grew up in Hackensack. “But having immigrant parents from Italy, they didn’t consider that a real job or career and always guided me with school.”

He also watched a lot of television.

“Richard Pryor to me is the God of comedy,” Sicari said. “I learned to do voice impersonations from him.”

Sicari also used to break into the famed Oritani Theater on Main Street in Hackensack to see movies.

The theater site later became a strip club, he noted.

“I always say I was sneaking into the back of it as a kid and now there are guys sneaking out the back of it, not to be seen,” Sicari said.

In his 18 years of comedy, Sicari has performed in various New York City clubs -- including Caroline's -- and warmed up audiences for Comedy Central's “The Colbert Report” and "The Daily Show."

He recently landed a talent agent and is promoting himself on social media.

“I don’t talk about being a lawyer or judge," Sicari said. "It’s all from my life.

"People don’t like lawyers, they don’t find them funny. People that know me say the person on stage is more like the real version of who I am," he said. "The lawyer is the act. That’s my costume, so to speak.”
