Nicole Brooks-DeORio – who teaches 1st grade in Ridgefield -- was diagnosed with breast cancer last August, and after treatment “was on the road to recovery and the future looked positive,” according to a GoFundMe page created to raise funds for medical expenses and meals for her family.

But in the late Spring, she started to experience symptoms, and new tumors were discovered on her liver and colon, the page states.

“Her world … our world has been turned upside down,” the page states.

The fundraising page was created Wednesday, and by Thursday morning it had garnered more than $20,000 in donations and many messages of support.

“No one fights alone & you have countless people behind you for whatever you may need. You are stronger than you know and more beautiful than you realize!” one supporter, Debbie Gitto, wrote.

DeOrio is undergoing chemotherapy and will also have surgeries, the page states.

“Through your donations--medical expenses, meals, and other expenses can be funded for the next few months. Any amount will help this wonderful family,” the page states.
