MOONACHIE, N.J. -- Community members are rallying around the familiy of a Moonachie fourth-grader who suffered a brain aneurysm a month ago.
Maria Paulina Garces Alzate, who attends the Robert L. Craig School, has undergone emergency neurosurgery and remained hospitalized in pediatric intensive care.
Her mother is pregnant and step-father was taking time off from work to help young Maria Paulina and her mother, according to a GoFundMe page that had raised nearly $9,500 in less than three weeks.
"Doctors say her road to recovery will be long and very difficult," the page says. "Maria Paulina’s family has limited healthcare coverage, and the medical care she requires is very expensive.
"This will create more financial hardship on the family."
