HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. — More than $40,000 had been raised as of Wednesday evening on a GoFundMe for the family of Matthew E. Galas, a Hasbrouck Heights husband and father.

Galas, a Ridgefield Park native, died on Monday, Jan. 2 at 41 years old.

Hundreds of people expressed deep sadness on the GoFundMe page, launched by Jenny Noia-Gilson of Stratford, Conn.

The funds will support Galas' wife, Rachel, and his sons, who are 3 and 5 years old.

Galas, also known as "Matty G," was an captain of Don Bosco Prep's 1993 baseball team.

He continued playing baseball at Manhattan College before going on to play for Saint Rose in Albany, NY., where the team won the Division II World Series in 1997.

Galas coached at his alma mater for two years before joining his family's masonry business, Cage Construction in Hackensack. He was the company's vice president for more than a decade, a position he held when he died.

Galas was also a volunteer at the Saint Francis Food Pantry in Ridgefield Park.

A Funeral Mass for Galas will be on Sat., Jan. 7 at Saint Francis RC Church at 10:30 a.m., with entombment at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.
