RIDGEFIELD, N.J. — One day, Ridgefield local Yochana Khayat realized her late-night curiosity had developed into encyclopedic knowledge.

Khayat began studying osteoporosis, a disease that causes brittle bones due to tissue loss, after reading an article about adults shrinking in height as they grow older. The article linked osteoporosis to this phenomena.

The details of the disease grabbed her attention.

"My intrigue was piqued and there was no turning back," Khayat said.

Her interest in the disease led her to self-publish a book about its effects and how it can be treated.

According to Khayat, one in three women and one in five men will be affected by the disease at some point in their lives.

Despite these high numbers, Khayat is aware that sometimes people need to be enticed to learn more about an issue that could directly affect them in the future.

She plans to write a series of blog posts about the disease's prominence and what lifestyle alterations could help prevent its symptoms.

"Not many people have the stamina to tackle a large book in something they are not so sure will affect them," Khayat said.

Khayat decided to self-published her book through Amazon, so her research wouldn't be outdated once it was released.

"When you're publishing books that contain new and upcoming scientific and medical information, having that information released to the general public two or three years later is obviously not ideal," Khayat said.

Currently, osteoporosis has no cure, but there are a series of treatments that can make improvements to skeletal health.

As a pre-medical junior biology student at Rutgers University, Khayat hopes to focus on the disease more in the future but recognizes her path may take her elsewhere.

"I'm keeping my options open, but no matter what, I do want to continually spread awareness about osteoporosis and consistently update with any new information I uncover," Khayat said.

Her book Preventing and Treating Osteoporosis: The Complete Guide: Volume I: Lifestyle and Nutrition is available on Amazon. Her wordpress blog can be viewed by clicking here.
