Much Ado About Mutton: Ridgewood Wants Mattress Store Sheep Herded

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- A demand by Ridgewood officials to remove Betsy the sheep from the sidewalk in front of a local mattress store is shear nonsense, the owners say.

Store owners say removing Betsy would be udderly ridiculous.

"It's not like she is running around or grazing. She is an icon," said Barbara Goodfriend of the Healthy Choice Organic Mattresses store.

Betsy has beckoned passersby into the Wilsey Square store without incident -- well, not entirely....Earlier this year, the life-sized fiberglass sheep went missing from in front of the store after being left out overnight.

Daily Voice published a story about the disappearance in the hopes someone would return her.

It turned out a fellow merchant scooped Betsy up -- before a patron noticed the iconic figure and told the salon owner to return her.

In response to the summons, which deems Betsy "unsafe," the store owners have launched a petition drive to keep her out front.A Nov. 9 court date was scheduled.
