Gilda A. Welby, 88, Little Ferry Resident

LITTLE FERRY, N.J. – Gilda A. (Sampugnaro) Welby, of Little Ferry, died Friday, Jan. 15. She was 88.

Born in Hackettstown and raised in Manhattan and the Bronx, N.Y., she resided in Saddle Brook before moving to Little Ferry. She was a volunteer with the New York Public Library. An avid reader, she also enjoyed cooking. Prior to raising her family, she was a secretary for the art director of Double Day Publishing in New York City.

She was the wife of the late Robert Welby; mother of James R. Welby and Moira Kristofich; grandmother of Mary Kristofich; Jonathan Kristofich and his wife, Charlotte, who are expecting her great-grandson; sister of Carmine Sampugnaro and his wife, Angela; and sisters-in-law Evelyn and Anne.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Welby; and brothers Claudio and John Sampugnaro.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn. Cremation will be private.
