CVP EXCLUSIVE: Wood-Ridge police took four juveniles from the Avalon apartment complex into custody for setting a fire tonight that destroyed four garages at the development.

The quartet was “fooling around with matches, lit some charcoal and it apparently got away from them,” Police Chief Joseph Rutigliano told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The row of four garages behind Building No. 4 were “a total loss,” Rutigliano said.

Firefighters who made quick work of the blaze were barely finished when Lt. Michael O’Donnell and his team gathered enough information to take the youngsters into custody, the chief said.

They were being processed at police headquarters tonight, he said.

Police briefly evacuated Building No. 4 as a precaution but allowed residents to return soon after, Rutigliano said.
