The Bergen County Police Chiefs Association expressed its support this afternoon for New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes’ pursuit of fugitive JoAnne Chesimard — and justice for the family of Werner Foerster, the trooper she gunned down in cold blood — amid President Obama’s attempt to normalize relations with Cuba.
“We hope that a change in policy and relations with Cuba will include discussion and negotiation in the return of this infamous convicted escaped inmate, as well as many other criminals who seek and enjoy asylum just 90 miles from our great country,” said BCPCA President Joseph T. Rugliano, who is chief of police in Wood-Ridge.
Chesimard shot and killed Foerster in May 1973, during a motor vehicle stop barely 200 yards from the New Jersey Turnpike administrative building at Exit 9.
She was sentenced to life in prison but escaped and fled to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum.
