“Operation Safe City” was launched by Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal in tandem with Englewood police and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Teaneck police.

Members of the ad hoc task force “focused their efforts on resolving open shooting cases, as well as targeting violent criminal activity and narcotics offenses in and around Englewood, in an effort to prevent future shooting incidents,” Grewal said.

Prompting the action were a dozen shootings – many of them at the beginning of the summer – the prosecutor said.

The three who were arrested on attempted murder include ex-con Jamal “Mally” Robinson, 40, of Teaneck, who authorities said pulled the trigger in shootings on July 5 and 7. One victim was shot in the leg and the other in the arm, authorities told Daily Voice.

Robinson remained held on $1 million bail in the Bergen County Jail, following his July 19 arrest.

Also charged with attempted murder were Corey McKay, 20, of Hackensack, and Tyrone “Tizzy” Stephens, 21, of Englewood, in connection with a shooting at an Englewood apartment on June 2.

Authorities said Stephens was carrying a shotgun as he and four accomplices carrying handguns entered a Layfayette Place apartment building just before 11:30 p.m. that day, the prosecutor said.

The crew went directly to a second-floor apartment and knocked on the door, he said.

They tried to force their way in when someone answered, but the victims “were able to prevent the door from being fully opened and wrested the shotgun away,” Grewal said.

One of the would-be robbers fired three rounds from a handgun into the apartment, but no one was struck, he said.

They then fled, leaving the shotgun behind.

Stephens was wanted for attempted murder, armed burglary and child endangerment when he was arrested without incident in late August in Bogota, Grewal said.

Stephens posted $750,000 bail and was released from the county jail four days later.

McKay, meanwhile, remained held on $250,000 bail.

Eleven other defendants were arrested on various drug charges, Grewal said Thursday. One was charged with weapons offenses and four others with witness tampering, he said.

“In total, 10 search warrants were executed and resulted in the recovery of 7 illegally possessed firearms and a quantity of marijuana and cocaine, as well as the recovery of United States currency,” Grewal said.

“Following the initiative, there was one shooting incident,” the prosecutor added.
