Former Bergen Catholic wrestler charged with attacking 5 in Jersey Shore rampage

BEYOND BERGEN: A former Bergen Catholic wrestling star from Ridgefield Park went on a violent rampage in Manasquan over the Memorial Day weekend — stealing and crashing a motorized beach cart and punching several people, including a 72-year-old man whose house he broke into, authorities said.

Lukas D. Iorio, 20, was released on $341,000 bail Monday after being arrested the night before on a host of charges, including carjacking and assault.

Iorio was a Region 2 champion and two-time state qualifier at Bergen Catholic, where he was team captain. He was 31-8 in his senior year in 2012 and took eighth place in the state championships in the 182-pound group.

Manasquan police said witnesses told them that Iorio jumped feet-first through the plastic windshield of a Manasquan Beach Patrol cart and began beating two occupants, who bailed out.

He then drove the cart toward the Manasquan inlet “at a high rate of speed while swerving at pedestrians,” one of whom he hit, Police Chief Elliott Correia said in a release.

After crashing the cart into a gazebo, Iorio punched another man while unsuccessfuly trying to steal a bicycle from a rack, the chief said.

He then fled into a home through an unlocked oor and repeatedly punched an elderly resident there in the face and head, Correia said.

Other family members jumped him and held him for the Beach Patrol, the chief said.

Five people were treated in the wake of the rampage — one of whom was taken to a local hospital, Correia said.
