Hasbrouck Heights Police Put Down Razors, Take Up No-Shave November Cause

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. -- Hasbrouck Heights police became the latest North Jersey law enforcement agency to hop aboard the No-Shave November movement to raise awareness of men's physical and mental health issues.

"We relaxed our policy on facial hair so that our officers can participate," Hasbrouck Heights Det. Lt. Michael Colaneri Jr. said.

Participating "Movember" officers are being asked to donate $100 each.

As of Wednesday morning, $1,000 had been raised, he said.

All must follow simple rules:

1. Each "bro" had to begin the month clean-shaven;

2. Over the course of the month, each must grow -- and groom -- a mustache;

3. "Don't fake it. No beards. No goatees. And no fake mustaches."

With no female officers working in Hasbrouck Heights, Colaneri Jr. said it's important for the department to raise awareness for men's health.

"If someone sees us walking around with a beard and in our uniform they will approach us and ask about it," Colarneri Jr. said. "It helps to get the message out there."
