Responding to a call just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Jeffrey Napolitano spotted 22-year-old Donte Gaskin leaving the store, Police Chief Richard Behrens said.

Gaskin took off across Route 46 into the parking lot of an industrial building on the other side of the highway, the chief said.

Backup Officers Christopher Inserra, John Bussanich, Victor Migliorino, and Tambi Ibrahim arrived soon after and found Gaskin in a ditch alongside the building, Behrens said.

He tried to run again but was caught and charged with shoplifting, possession of burglar tools, resisting arrest and hindering apprehension before being released on a court summons, the chief said.
