Karim R. Ali, 41, was arrested after the boy was brought to Hackensack University Medical Center with blunt-force trauma in his abdomen, acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said early Wednesday evening.

Ali, who Grewal said is unemployed, was being held in the Bergen County Jail, charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment.

He was arrested following a joint investigation by Grewal's Special Victims Unit and Wood-Ridge police, who were alerted by the state Division of Child Protection, the prosecutor said.

An initial appearance was scheduled for Friday afternoon in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
