K-9 Döme faithfully served the township "with honor and distinction" for nine years before his retirement in January 2015, Police Chief James N. Batelli said.

He then lived with Rapp, his wife, Amy and their family in Oakland.

A Shepherd born in Czechoslovakia, Döme was Rapp's first canine and was crosstrained in drug and tracking.

"Döme was a truly great dog – wonderful disposition with children but when very assertive in the field," Batelli told Daily Voice.

"He participated in several significant narcotic investigations for our agency and also was called to assist several other law enforcement agencies during his career," Batelli said.

Yet he also "had a gentle disposition and was extremely popular with the children in the township, where he would visit schools and different community groups," the chief said.
