Officer Steven Fernandez pulled over the Toyota Avalon for a motor vehicle violation around 8:30 p.m. Thursday on eastbound Route 46 near Overpeck Creek, Lt. Joseph Rella said.

While speaking with the driver -- identified as Jonathon Fred Burgos, 26, of Philadelphia, PA -- Fernandez detected the odor of raw marijuana and spotted a blunt on the driver’s side dashboard, Rella said.

A search turned up the hidden compartment, filled with bags of heroin, he said.

Burgos was held on $20,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail on various drug-related charges, as well as with transporting property derived from a crime.
