RIVER VALE, N.J. -- River Vale police are launching a drone this Thursday for use in emergency operations, crime scene investigations and public safety programs, Chief William C. Giordano said Tuesday.

Dubbed "Angel 1," the professional-grade unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) carries two cameras -- one a high-definition model and the other thermographic, which produces images without the need for light, Giordano said.

Money forfeited by defendants in criminal case paid for the drone, so there's no cost for taxpayers, the chief said.

Giordano researched several vendors and ultimately went with Archangel UAV Technologies.

Borough officers assigned to the UAV team "are undergoing comprehensive training to conform to all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations," Giordano said. "This training includes both classroom and practical flight training, which is being instructed by Archangel UAV Technologies."
