Runaway tire on Route 17 in Wood-Ridge causes crash, damages cars

ONLY ON CVP: Wood-Ridge police were trying to determine where a tire came from that bounded onto Route 17 at the start of the evening rush, hitting three different cars and causing a crash.

The first car was hit by the runaway tire just after 5 p.m. Thursday on the highway’s northbound side — minutes after a separate multi-car crash on southbound 17, Detective Joseph Rutigliano Jr. told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The first vehicle stopped and was rear-ended by another as the tire flew over the divider and struck two separate cars, Rutigliano said.

The driver of the third vehicle kept going and didn’t report the incident until yesterday, he said.

The driver of the fourth pulled into a service station and called police.

No immediate injuries were reported. All of the vehicles were driven away.
