Third luring attempt in three days in Leonia this morning

PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT: For the third time in three days, a man this morning tried to lure a girl into a car in Leonia, Police Chief Thomas Rowe said. This time, however, the driver had another girl in the backseat who “appeared to be upset,” he said.

“At approximately 8:10am today, a 13 year-old female was walking on a side road near Fort Lee Road when she was approached by a 4-door, older model, gold Honda,” Rowe said.

“The male driver of the vehicle rolled down his window, asked the girl to get in his car and show him where the Post Office was located,” the chief said.

The girl told police she said, “No, thank you” and ran west on Fort Lee Road. The driver took off east on Fort Lee Road toward Fort Lee.

The girl said another girl — white, 10 to 12 years old — was sitting in the back seat.

She was wearing a pink coat and a pink, brown and red hat, the girl said.

The youngster in the car “appeared to be upset,” Rowe said.

She described the driver as white, in his 50s, with a medium build, grey mustache and grey hair.

Two separate incidents reportedly occurred on Wednesday when two different sets of girls said they were approached around the same time in Leonia by a man in a light blue, 4-door, older model SUV with New Jersey license.

The driver first asked for directions, then “made a very inappropriate sexual comment to them,” Rowe told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

It was unclear whether today’s driver is believed to be the same man.

This comes after two other reported incidents this week, in Ridgefield Park and Norwood (see below).

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call Leonia PD: (201) 944-0800.
