ONLY ON CLIFFVIEW PILOT: A former massage parlor was demolished Sunday after one of Bergen’s largest — and stubbornest — fires in memory tore through the Route 46 building, with flames raging through the night and into the early morning.

“It will not die,” one responder told CLIFFVIEW PILOT from the scene of the seven-alarm blaze around 4 a.m. The fire, which began around 9 o’clock Saturday night, brought departments from 17 towns and forced a mile-long stretch of highway closed from the Little Ferry circle to Teterboro Airport. Several nearby homes were evacuated.

No deaths or injuries were reported at Heaven Is a Spa on Route 46 West (aka Sylvan Avenue).

“Considering the fire and smoke, it was crazy,” one observer told CLIFFVIEW PILOT around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. “It’s huge.”

The blaze, just north of Liberty Street near Summit Avenue, engulfed the two-story building.

It began around 9 p.m. as a report of heavy smoke, one emergency responder said.

But then “all of a sudden it just took off,” he said.

Before long, “fire was shooting through the roof.”
