A 40-something woman struck and killed on Route 17 in Wood-Ridge near the Hasbrouck Heights border late Friday had been asking people if she could use their phone moments earlier, a law enforcement official told Daily Voice.

The woman "was at the White Castle asking people to borrow a phone," the source said. "No one gave her one, so she left....Right after that, she was struck."

The woman was apparently walking south along the highway median when a vehicle hit her just before midnight, he said.
