WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. — School buses are equipped with stop signs and flashing red lights to protect kids from passing cars when they walk to and from the bus. But it doesn't really work if drivers ignore the sign and speed around the bus.

Wood-Ridge parent Richard Fallon has recorded several instances over the past couple months of cars speeding past stop signs on buses.

"Someone's going to get hurt," Fallon said.

According to Fallon, his son was almost struck while walking in a crosswalk. The oncoming driver made no indication that they would stop, forcing a nearby crossing guard to jump in front of the car to gain the driver's attention.

He said cars speed past school buses on "most days."

Wood-Ridge police are aware of the issue and have been instructed to increase patrols around Wood-Ridge High School when school lets out.

However, Fallon believes the issue may be statewide.

A 14-year old in Upper Township, N.J. was struck by a car while crossing the street to board their morning school bus.

Wood-Ridge Police said they had no information suggesting Wood-Ridge had an increase in school bus-related incidents.
