RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. — Former international table tennis player Sue Chak is sharing her love for the sport by coaching youngsters and adults in local communities.

“I want to enrich the community,” the Dumont resident said. “This is great for kids to improve their hand-eye coordination, motor skills and it’s very important for brain development. Plus it has very little injuries.”

Chak, owner of KiddieGym USA, started competing in ping pong when she was 9. She has more than 20 years of experience and has won awards in several national tournaments. She also competed in the Commonwealth Games 2000 representing her native India.

Chak, who has an 8- and 9-year-old, began coaching them at home.

“I started thinking how to engage my kids in any kind of sports,” Chak said. “I tried soccer and other sports but I found not every kid is ready to run for 90 minutes, so I needed to offer another option.”

Now she's teaching classes to other youngsters in Teaneck and Ridgefield Park, with Teaneck on tap for December.

There are also talks to possibly launch programs in Dumont, Edgewater and Ridgewood.

Paddles and balls are provided by KiddieGym USA.
