“We had a major road improvement initiative in place in the borough, where we were replacing curbs and sidewalks, resurfacing streets, replacing storm drains and planting new trees,” said Borough Administrator Chris Eilert. “Approximately 70 percent of the borough is completed now.”
The council submitted a grant application to the New Jersey Department of Transportation at the Sept. 15 meeting to complete the last phase of the project.
The remaining streets slated to be redone in 2016 and 2016 include 6th Street, 8th Street, portions of 9th and 10th streets, portions of Center Street, Union Avenue and the entirety of Humboldt Street, Charter Oak Street and Rose Street.
A portion of Sussex, Innes, Windsor and Marlboro Roads was paved this year. And a portion of Wood-Ridge Street and all of 4th Street and Ryerson Avenue were complete this year.
“When it’s completed it will all wind up to be somewhere in the neighborhood of a $10 to $12 million undertaking,” Eilert said.
Neglia Engineering in Lyndhurst has and will continue to handle the design portion of the project before it goes out to bid.
“When we initiated this, most of the roads in the borough hadn’t been restored in any way since the 1950s,” Eilert said. “There were slate sidewalks, slate curbs and concrete streets, which are very difficult to maintain.”
“It’s obviously a little nerve wracking to live through this with no access to your driveway but the end product is certainly an improvement from what was there.”
