Six cherry trees are arranged in a crescent, in memory of Toru Kumon, the founder of Kumon North America, and Takeshi Kumon, his son and first student.
Kumon North America‘s corporate offices in Teaneck are just over a mile from the grove, which has two benches that bear plaques with quotes chosen by the widows of both men.
“For 25 years, Kumon has helped thousands of children in Bergen County,” said Matthew Lupsha, who heads the company’s green initiative. “We created this area as a part of our commitment to the community and the environment we share.”
Located next to a new children’s playground, the Kumon Grove “will be a permanent symbol of our dedication to children, the environment, and the enduring legacy of our founders,” Lupsha said.
“We hope more companies like Kumon dedicate time to enhance the lives of our children,” Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan said. “Bergen County is lucky to receive such support from an educational company that truly values both academics and the environment.”
To find the site: Come in off Fort Lee Road and head around to the southwest section of the park.
