An Arcadia Road resident went outside at 4:10 a.m. and found Fred Harakandi inside his unlocked vehicle, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

Harakandi ran off onto Midland Avenue, dropping change from the vehicle along the way, the sergeant said.

Soon after, Officer Brian Rypkema found Harakandi on Broadway at East 55th Street in Elmwood Park and arrested him.

He had two laptops and a cellphone -- valued at a total of $2,000 -- along with spare change, all taken from three unlocked vehicles parked on Midland Avenue, Metzler said.

Harakandi already was facing charges out of Leonia and Palisades Park following a June spree with two accomplice that included the theft of a vehicle, authorities in those towns told Daily Voice.

Harakandi was released without bail from Fair Lawn police headquarters early Friday pending a court hearing on four counts each of burglary and theft.

Meezler urged residents to keep their cars locked to help prevent such crimes of opportunity.
