HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. -- An alert Hasbrouck Heights patrol officer nabbed a Passaic man who police said stole change from several cars in town and in Wood-Ridge overnight.
Rashawn Vaughn, 20, also was wanted on oustanding warrants when Officer Anthony Rossillo spotted him on Woodside Avenue just after 4 a.m. Friday, Detective Lt. Michael Colaneri, Jr. told Daily Voice.
Vaughn "gave conflicting accounts and could not come up with a valid reason why he was in that area," Colaneri said.
Rossillo found him carrying a large amount of loose change and turned up the warrants during a background check, the lieutenant said.
Vaughn later admitted entering four cars in Hasbrouck Heights and stealing loose change from each, Colaneri said.
Borough police processed Vaughn on four counts each of burglary and theft, then turned him over to their colleagues in Wood-Ridge after he admitted committing at least one car burglary there, the lieutenant said.
Meanwhile, Colaneri reminded residents to lock their cars and remove their valuables.
